A log of yew wood
A small log of yew from southeast Michigan.

Yew

Yew is a coniferous tree or shrub. It is commonly grown as a landscape shrub and is capable of taking topiary style trimming. The wood is known for being springy. Yew is a highly prized and also highly decorative wood. Generally, it is only available in small sections. There is a strong contrast between the golden yellow heartwood and creamy white sapwood. Some pieces will have streaks of red through the heartwood. It turns exceptionally well and polishes to a high sheen. Yew is considered a softwood but is actually fairly hard.
